The 40-odd studies revised for this volume explore the sometimes harmonious, often contentious relationship between French theatre and Christianity. Most focus on rather ancient works, from the Middle Ages to the era of classicism, but the 20th century is glimpsed at through the works of Péguy, Claudel and Mauriac.
