In Soeur Philomène (1861), Edmond and Jules Goncourt (who spared no effort to research unfamiliar places such as a convent and a hospital) display their consummate mastery over an aesthetics of visual understatement. This early jewel of naturalism seems to assert that faith is a feminine and neurotic phenomenon.
