Assia Djebar is a writer and professor as well as a filmmaker, who was inducted into the Académie française in 2005. This is a study of Les Alouettes naïves (“The Naïve Larks”), her novel of war and love set during the Algerian War of Independence, whose central theme is the idea of commitment.
