Jean Tortel, “the poet of Gardens”, perhaps “the greatest unknown figure of late-20th-century poetry”, published the quirky Les Villes ouvertes in 1965 – a turning point in his work. It is studied here with particular attention to the poet’s gaze, the pronoun I, and the breakup of the verse/prose antinomy.
