Les Sept Cordes de la Lyre is a feminine variation on the myth of Dr. Faustus, a fantastical drama whose form has no equivalent in the George Sand canon. Gabriel, conceived as a dialogued novel, is about the insoluble identity quest of a young female aristocrat who was brought up as a man and suddenly finds love.
