RÉFÉRENCE ÉPIQUE ET MODERNITÉ

CHAUVIN CEDRIC

In modern times, the epic has often been considered as an obsolete genre. Yet, the epics of the past are constantly being retranslated and modern narrative literature regularly refers to traditional epics: examining this paradox has laid bare some of the tensions specific to modern translations of traditional epics as well as those underlying the modern definition of the novel. Works discussed through this essay include Philippe Jaccottet and Pierre Klossowski`s translations, Jean Giono and Julien Gracq`s novels.
